Facile fabrication of superhydrophobic nanocomposites coating materials using nanoemulsion polymerization technique and its application for protecting the petroleum carbon steel pipelines

Abstract This paper aims to fabricate new superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating materials protect the inner surfaces of petroleum pipelines from corrosion. The batch emulsification polymerization technique (BEM) was used as a facial eco-friendly prepare three hydrophobic (styrene/vinyl acetate) copolymers. sol–gel method SiO 2 nanoparticles (SiO -NPs) with average size ranging 90 101 nm. functionalized -NPs were prepared using hexadecyl trimethoxy silane (HDTS) precursor increasing hydrophobicity character unfunctionalized -NPs. Three [(styrene/vinyl acetate copolymer/functionalized NPs)] nanocomposites denoted M1, M3, and M5 fabricated by incorporating 1, 3, 5 wt% functionalized-SiO NPs into styrene/vinyl copolymer, respectively. effectiveness analyzed contact angle measurement transmission electron atomic force microscopies. results showed that highest 161.21 o obtained M5-nanocomposite. corrosion efficiency 99.63% at 300 ppm concentration M5-nanocomposite-coated solution, 298 K, 24 days.
